The Chippy — a Hull BBS since 1996

THE HUMBER. THE SKYLINE. THE CHIPPY.EVERYONE WELCOME

A HULL BBS SINCE 1996

Good to have
you here.

The Chippy is a bulletin board system: a place to connect through a text terminal, leave messages and spend a little time with other people.

Born in Hull on the Amiga in 1996. Back online in 2026. Whether you remember the dial-up days or this is your first BBS, you’re welcome here.

01 / Make a connection

BRING YOUR OWN TERMINAL

Open your BBS client, choose a connection type and enter the details below. We recommend SyncTERM on desktop or TERMinator on phones and tablets. Download links are in the first-visit guide below.

SSH

RECOMMENDED

An encrypted connection to The Chippy.

Host
bbs.thechippy.org
Port
2222

First visit? Use new as your SSH username to start registration. Returning callers: use your BBS username.

Telnet

THE CLASSIC ROUTE

The traditional, unencrypted connection.

Host
bbs.thechippy.org
Port
8888

Choose Login or New User on the welcome screen. Telnet sends your session, including your password, without encryption.

First time on a BBS?

Choose a BBS terminal:

  • SyncTERM — our recommendation for Windows, Mac and Linux.
  • TERMinator — our recommendation for Android, iPhone and iPad.

Both support SSH and Telnet, with proper BBS artwork display. We strongly recommend SSH: it encrypts your username, password and session. Use Telnet only if your client cannot connect using SSH.

  1. Open a terminal client that supports BBS connections and ANSI artwork.
  2. Create an SSH connection to bbs.thechippy.org on port 2222. Keep the host and port in their separate fields if your client asks for them.
  3. Recommended display: 80 columns × 25 rows, with ANSI / CP437 character display. Select these settings where your client offers them.
  4. Connect, then follow the prompts. With SSH, use the username new for your first visit.

A BBS is operated with the keyboard. Follow the menu’s letter commands and on-screen prompts to find your way around.
